"Animal welfare matters deeply, and many residents have written to me about non-stun slaughter, when animals are killed for halal or kosher meat. I share their concern, and in February I supported Esther McVey’s Ten Minute Rule Bill that would – had it passed – have required the clear labelling of halal and kosher meat.
The law currently allows religious exemptions, but there are also questions about whether the law is being properly applied. The Slaughter of Animals Act 1933 says non-stun slaughter should only be used for meat that is exclusively intended for consumption by Jews and Muslims. But we know halal meat is sold to members of the wider public – often without customers knowing – because it is cheaper to serve it indiscriminately.
